About Livia

Livia S. Eberlin received her B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Campinas in São Paulo, Brazil. She then moved to the USA and entered the PhD program in Analytical Chemistry at Purdue University under the mentorship of Prof. R. Graham Cooks. During her PhD, Dr. Eberlin developed and applied desorption electrospray ionization mass spectrometry imaging to cancer diagnosis. In 2012, she moved to Stanford University where she did her postdoctoral research under the guidance of Prof. Richard N. Zare, where she continued to develop mass spectrometry technology for biomedical research. During that period, she received the L’Oréal for Women in Science Fellowship, a K99 pathway to independence award from the NIH/NCI, and was listed in the Forbes 30 under 30 list in Healthcare. In 2016, she started her independent career as an Assistant Professor in the Chemistry Department at the University of Texas at Austin. Prof. Eberlinis passionate about research at the interface of chemistry and medicine. Her research group is focused on developing innovative mass spectrometry technologies to address critical problems in health-related research.

About her Talk, "AI, Machine Learning, and Cancer Detection on a Pen"

Tissue diagnosis is critical during surgical removal of solid cancers for surgical margin evaluation and optimal excision. We have recently reported the development of a innovative handheld and biocompatible device, the “MasSpec Pen”, for rapid and non-destructive diagnosis of cancer tissues. The MasSpec Pen provides the unique and transformative ability to assess molecular markers of disease directly from tissues. In this talk I will highlight the development of this technology, and the machine learning and statistical classifiers implemented for clinical use.
